I had been looking for information on 'Miss Halayko' for years. She was an inspirational teacher whom I got to know in Gr. 13 at Southmount Secondary in Hamilton. She was a real character who had a lot of real life experience and great intelligence. Mary Halayko was one of my inspirations to become a French teacher. A great person! I still have the Petit Robert dictionary that she gave to me when she was cleaning out her room at Southmount and I came by to visit; she found out that I was majoring in French and let me have a bunch of resources. I thank God that I had the privilege of being taught by this incredible, giving woman.

Ms. Halayko taught me grade 12 and 13 French and encouraged me to go on an exchange to France. She was a wonderful teacher who instilled in me a love of the French language, culture and literature, and was instrumental in determining my career path.

My sincerest condolences to her family.
